Many Filipino parents today name their babies after western names like Bryan for a baby boy or Jennifer for a baby girl. But many still name their babies with traditional Christian names and some with indigenous names or sometimes after the names of their parents or ancestors and at times, a combination of their names.

Filipino names often reflect a blend of cultural influences, showcasing the country's rich history. Many names are derived from Spanish, due to over three centuries of Spanish colonization. As a result, it's common to find names like Juan, Maria, and Jose. The practice of using both the father's and mother's surnames, akin to the Spanish naming convention, is prevalent. This results in names like Juan dela Cruz Santos, where "dela Cruz" is the mother's maiden name, adding another layer of cultural richness and familial connection.

Additionally, Filipino names can also include indigenous elements, blending native languages with Spanish, English, and even Chinese influences. For example, names like Bayani, which means "hero" in Tagalog, or Liwanag, meaning "light," showcase the native linguistic heritage. Modern Filipino parents also often get creative with names, crafting unique combinations or adopting global trends while retaining cultural identity. This diversity in naming practices highlights the Philippines' unique position at the crossroads of various cultures and historical era.
